Temperature Monitoring / Data Logger
Temperature monitoring is the planned measurement, recording and evaluation of temperatures. A data logger stores measurements at defined intervals; devices with data transmission can also provide information during transit. In temperature-controlled shipping, monitoring documents conditions at the respective measurement location.
What makes measurement data meaningful?
- The sensor position must match the measurement objective. Air temperature beside the product and temperature inside the product are different measured quantities.
- Measurement range, accuracy and calibration must cover the limits being monitored. A long measurement interval can miss brief events.
- Timestamps, the start and end of recording and identification of the associated shipment enable a traceable evaluation.
What happens when a limit is exceeded?
A temperature excursion is documented and assessed according to the defined quality procedure. The logger reports measurements but does not decide on product release. This requires, among other things, the temperature level, duration, measurement uncertainty and product data. Critical sensor locations should be known from suitable investigations of the packaging.
