Reverse Logistics for Thermal Packaging
Reverse logistics describes the flow of goods and materials back from use. For reusable thermal packaging, it includes returning used packaging and preparing it for further shipments. The return loop is a separate process with its own responsibilities, transport movements and stock requirements.
Which steps are involved?
- Organise the return: define the collection or return-shipping route, identification and any necessary transport packaging.
- Inspect the packaging and its components, clean them where required and replace damaged parts as specified.
- Recondition suitable elements and prepare the complete configuration for its next use.
Which metrics support planning?
Return lead time, return rate, loss rate and refurbishment effort show whether enough released packaging is available. A slow return cycle, for example, increases the circulating stock required. These factors affect the total cost per shipment. Returned packaging must not automatically be reused; release depends on its condition, design and intended use.
