Recyclability
Recyclability describes the extent to which packaging can be processed into usable secondary raw materials after use. This depends on material properties and suitability for collection, sorting and actual recycling processes. Technical recyclability and completed recycling are therefore different claims.
What affects the assessment?
- Material combinations and separability: composite layers, adhesives or permanently attached foreign materials can make processing more difficult.
- Contamination and residual contents: coolant media and packaging components may require separate disposal routes.
- The available infrastructure and acceptance criteria at the disposal location. An industrial take-back route is not automatically available everywhere.
Is recycled content the same thing?
No. Recycled content describes recycled material already incorporated into a product, for example rEPS. Recyclability concerns potential recycling after use. To provide clear information, manufacturers should identify the relevant components, any separation required and suitable disposal routes. Paper, EPS or a reusable design alone does not establish a better environmental performance for the entire shipment.
