Thermal Cover
A thermal cover is a cover for pallets or other load units. Depending on its construction, it reduces heat transfer and the effects of radiation. It can delay a rise or fall in the load temperature, but does not automatically control the product temperature.
What determines its protective performance?
- The material and construction determine which modes of heat transfer the cover reduces. A reflective surface alone does not establish its insulation performance.
- Fit, closure and open areas at the base and edges affect protection of the complete load unit.
- Ambient temperature, solar radiation, wind and exposure duration form part of the assessment, for example during a tarmac delay.
Can a cover replace a pallet shipper?
A thermal cover alone does not provide general evidence of protection within a particular temperature range or for a fixed shipping duration. This requires defined test conditions and measurements on the loaded unit. It can serve as an additional protective measure within the transport concept; its suitability must match the product and the process.
