Digital Twin in the Cold Chain
A digital twin is a digital model linked to a real system and its data. In the cold chain, it can represent, for example, packaging, its payload and the course of transport. Measurement and operational data are used to assess states and improve predictions.
How does it differ from a single simulation?
- The link to the real unit or process is maintained through suitable data. A temperature curve calculated once does not by itself meet this requirement.
- Material properties, geometry, initial temperatures and ambient temperature profiles are possible inputs for thermal modelling.
- Predictions are compared with measurements. Differences indicate where model assumptions or the underlying data need improvement.
Does the model replace a packaging test?
A model can compare variants and reveal risks earlier. Its conclusions, however, apply only within its verified scope of use. Uncertain input data or a different packout can change the result. Physical testing remains necessary to demonstrate the reliability of the model and the packaging.
