rEPS – EPS with Recycled Content
In packaging, rEPS refers to EPS containing a proportion of recycled polystyrene. The designation alone defines neither a uniform percentage nor the origin of the recycled material. The specifications and evidence for the particular material or product are decisive.
Which information makes recycled content traceable?
- The declared proportion and its reference basis: does it relate to the EPS component or the entire packaging?
- The source of the recycled material, for example production residues or previously used products, where declared.
- The underlying verification method. Physical recycled content and an accounting-based allocation should be clearly distinguished.
Is rEPS automatically recyclable again?
Recycled content and recyclability describe different properties. Further recycling depends, among other things, on construction, contamination and available collection routes. Insulation performance, mechanical suitability and any contact requirements must also be demonstrated for the specific packaging. The material name does not support a blanket claim about its overall environmental impact.
