Rigid-Shell Coolant Pack
A rigid-shell coolant pack is a cooling element with a solid plastic casing, for example HDPE, or high-density polyethylene. The casing protects the filling and defines the external geometry. Depending on the version, the pack contains water or a specially formulated phase change material.
What determines its suitability?
- The casing must withstand the intended temperatures and mechanical loads. Its shape affects the available space and arrangement inside the shipper.
- The filling and quantity, together with the initial state, determine thermal buffering. The term rigid shell says nothing about the melting point.
- An approved preconditioning procedure ensures that the pack is used in the intended state.
Can the pack be used repeatedly?
This depends on the design and intended use. Before repeated use, checks must include leak-tightness, deformation, closure and cleanliness. Cleaning and release procedures must suit the product. Even a visibly robust pack has a limited service life and must not be arbitrarily exchanged for another type.
