Why do the envelope and edges matter?
- The envelope limits the ingress of gas and moisture. If damaged, insulation performance can decrease significantly.
- Edges, joints and adjoining components can create additional heat paths. The insulation value of the panel surface therefore does not automatically describe the entire shipper.
- A suitable protective construction prevents the panel from being punctured, bent or otherwise damaged during packing.
Can a panel be cut to size?
A finished, evacuated panel must not be cut or drilled like an ordinary insulation board, as this would open its envelope. If damage is suspected, the component must be inspected or replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions; a small visible defect may be thermally significant.
