Hot Spot / Cold Spot
A hot spot is a comparatively warm location, and a cold spot a comparatively cold location, within the space or load being investigated. In thermal packaging, these temperature differences are identified under defined test conditions. The critical position can change during the test.
Where do temperature differences occur?
- The temperature close to a coolant pack may develop differently from that in a product area further away.
- Joints, the lid, the base and surfaces with different insulation properties can affect heat transfer.
- Load distribution, separating layers and air paths change local conditions. The centre and corners are therefore not automatically the most critical locations.
How are suitable measurement locations determined?
Several sensors, positioned with a documented rationale, record the temperature distribution with relevant loads and ambient profiles. The assessment considers which product areas reach or exceed the permitted limits first. The results inform sensor placement for subsequent temperature monitoring. A single centrally positioned logger cannot replace these investigations.
