Reusable packaging
Reusable packaging is intended for multiple uses within its specified application. For thermal packaging, the operating concept includes robust components as well as return logistics, inspection and preparation for the next use. Material or construction alone does not demonstrate reliable suitability for reuse.
What is checked between uses?
- The condition of the insulation, closures and coolant packs, and whether all required components are present.
- Cleanliness and any necessary cleaning using a suitable procedure. Damaged components or those without clear approval for use are removed from service.
- Correct pre-conditioning and assembly for the next shipment, including the current packing instructions.
How many reuse cycles are possible?
There is no universal figure. It depends on the design, transport stresses, handling and defined release criteria. An effective return process must make suitable packaging available again in time. Cost-effectiveness and environmental impact are assessed using actual reuse cycles, return transport, losses and reconditioning requirements; a theoretical maximum alone is insufficient.
