Last Mile
The last mile is the final delivery stage to the intended recipient. In temperature-controlled shipping, this stage ends with a defined handover and the planned subsequent handling of the goods. Its actual duration can vary considerably despite a short distance.
Which stresses are typical?
- Multiple stops, opening vehicle doors and waiting times change the conditions around the shipment.
- Failed deliveries can trigger additional storage or a second delivery attempt.
- The goods may remain exposed to heat or cold after arrival if receipt and storage have not been coordinated.
What should be agreed before shipping?
Receiving hours, contact persons and the procedure when the recipient is unavailable form part of the delivery plan. The packaging must cover the required time until the intended handover. A lane risk assessment also accounts for delays. Unattended delivery must not be considered suitable solely because an insulated shipper is used.
