WATER-BASED OR PCM
0 °C or −21 °C: choose the right filling
Water-based gel packs · 0 °C
Gel Pack Basic is available with a water-based filling and a melting point of 0 °C. The filling absorbs heat as it melts. Match the packout to your product, insulated shipper and shipping conditions.
PCM gel packs · −21 °C
Gel Pack Basic is also available with a PCM melting point of −21 °C for frozen shipping. This coolant pack is a safe alternative to dry ice and does not require dangerous goods labeling.
Melting point is not product temperature. Neither 0 °C nor −21 °C automatically indicates the temperature of the goods. Shipping duration depends on the coolant packs, insulated shipper, payload, preconditioning and ambient conditions together.
Need a different melting point? Explore our PCM packs and discuss the available configurations with our team.
PREPARATION AND USE
Precondition and pack gel packs correctly
Preconditioning
Follow the freezing temperature and duration specified in the packout instructions. Freeze gel packs flat and smooth so they can be positioned correctly in the insulated shipper.
Define the packout
Match the number and position of coolant packs to the product, insulated shipper and shipping conditions.
Check before packing
Use only undamaged coolant packs. Place them in the specified positions at the prescribed temperatures.

CHOOSING GEL PACKS
Frequently asked questions about gel packs
How long do gel packs keep goods cool?
There is no single duration for every shipment. Coolant quantity, the insulated shipper, payload, preconditioning and ambient temperatures all affect performance. Evaluate shipping duration for the complete packout.
Can gel packs be reused?
Gel Pack Basic is intended for single-use applications. If your process requires repeat use, ask our team about packs with more durable film and the handling requirements for your application.
How should gel packs be disposed of?
Follow the disposal instructions for the supplied product and local waste requirements. Consider the PE film and coolant filling separately, and confirm the available collection route for the material.
Can PCM −21 °C replace dry ice?
A −21 °C PCM gel pack can replace dry ice in suitable frozen-shipping applications. It is not a universal substitute: assess the required product temperature, shipping duration and complete packout.
How do gel packs differ from Foam Bricks?
Gel packs contain a gel filling in a film pouch. Foam Bricks have a foam core that helps them keep their shape. Choose the pack type to suit the arrangement and handling of coolant packs in your insulated shipper.
